New quilt is coming along

Squares have been trimmed:

And arranged one way:

And then another:

Trimming wasn’t planned, but a few squares turned out smaller than the others. Reason? Well, this quilt is made of all repurposed vintage linens which are almost always a blend. In my experience, they do not always like ironing. I do have my iron set to a lower setting, but some squares get warped anyway.

Therefore, this quilt ended up smaller than designed, so I will probably add white border around it. I thought about adding a few more squares, but I have only one more color I have not used, and I did not want to repeat some – I think the way this quilt works is to either use all different colors or repeat all. But it will be a baby/throw size in the end and that’s OK.

Thursday Lunch with TED:: Statistics is rarely amuzing (at least to me), but here it is actually funny.

I love hiking in CA in fall and winter or I burned 39 calories or I am feelin the burn

Some time ago I started hiking weekly, by myself, in the morning after I dropped Luka off to school. It was convenient because Luka’s school is close to many hikes. But then it became too hot which I really don’t like and I stopped, planning to pick it back up in the fall. But then I didn’t. Schedules just didn’t work.
But I did it again today, dropped Luka off, and went to Temescal Canyon. I challenged myself to get to the waterfall and back in 1 hr.

This is a terrible photo of the map at the entrance to the park, but you can see the waterfall mark. That was my destination. Of course I had to take some pictures along the way:

Proof that we do have some fall foliage in Southern CA (I do miss the fall colors of the colder climates; I do not miss the cold though).

The waterfall. Ok, not too impressive, but it’s there. Much more water in the Spring (I was actually surprised there was any water at all since the “rainy season” just started. I made it up here in 35 min.

On the way down…

20111122-101601.jpg20111122-101857.jpg

I ran back and made it to the car in just over 1 hr. I did not expect I would make it, not necessarily because I cannot do it, but because I did not know what the distance was and I randomly assigned myself 1 hr.

I made more than 3.6 km because I did not realize my GPS was off until point A on this map. I started and ended at B.
It was fantastic, I really enjoy hiking, especially this time of year. I used an app called GPS lite to track my hike. It calculated I burned 39 calories. I am thinking it might be a little off.
I am already feeling the burn in my legs. I will be in pain tomorrow.

New quilt sneak

Just a quick sneak… I just finished cutting those. Still missing white strips and squares.

Oh, no! I’m hooked

20111118-092345.jpg

I upgraded. That’s my old phone silly. The one taking the picture! Wasn’t planned. For the longest time I resisted. I don’t really talk on the phone. Just not me. I text occasionally. I guess i’m not a social type. Also, i am not “on the go”, I can check my email on my computer. And I really don’t need to do it that often. But, but…
The camera thing. Oh, the camera. That’s what this little gadget is to me, my camera. What I love the most is that you can take a pic and simply send it off. How many times did I wish for that feature on my regular camera. No cables, no downloading. Just like this…

So now I am going to have to take a lot of pics… Do you have a shoe in your cereal?

I did not go to the gym today, because I had to take photos around. This is where I was earlier today.
Oh my! This is bad. Did I need this distraction?

Have you ever been up at 4 am? I have… It’s the worst. Whatever you might think about 4 am, this will give you a whole new perspective…

Thursday lunch with TED:: high tech art (with a sense of humor)

Don’t you love TED? I do. So every Thursday I am going on a lunch date with TED. Here is what was said today…

Google Reader has a condition?

Sorry, an unexpected condition has occurred which is preventing Google Reader from fulfilling the request.

So now we are calling it a condition? Seriously?

New pillow…

It has been sitting on my desk waiting… first for backing (I ended piecing some leftovers because I was lazy to go shopping for more fabrics)… then for a pillow insert (it measures just a bit bigger than another pillow I made but the insert was just too small; couldn’t figure that one out). Finally… I just don;t like unfinished projects lying around.

I really, really like how this one turned out. 100% recycled material. Well, except the batting. But the top is all recycled sheets, all different prints. Even the solid is from a sheet! Amazing how these all come together. I actually started with a striped sheet, that had the orange solid as an edge, and then tried to find other prints that have the same orange in them. To my surprise, there were more than I could use! It really is amazing how the colors match, from many prints and solids.

I quilted in one direction, along the longer side of pieced rectangles, quite densely. Even though the pillow is a square, the design just does not allow for quilting in both directions.

Very, very happy. I will be doing one more in another color. Or maybe a quilt with the same design. Recently I had some luck with purple sheets. Purple maybe?

  • It's been probably 10 years since I bought my first orchid. It shriveled and died after blooming. Since then I bough/ was gifted many more. All died. Until this one. I actually do not remember when it bloomed last. But it's been months. I almost forgot about it, and honestly I did not take care of if much. I noticed a few times that it did not dry out yet... The other day I noticed a few buds. And, voila, today we have the first flower. Isn't it beautiful. My second favorite flower. What is my favorite flower?
